As a response to widespread concern about the state of marine ecosystems and the perceived failure of existing policies, many organizations are developing market-based instruments that promote sustainability. Eco-standards such as shopping guides, eco-labels, and stewardship certifications are now commonplace. However, in many cultures dietary guidelines have existed for thousands of years, and anthropologists have argued that such dietary rules emerged to reduce environmental impacts by encouraging exploitation of productive species, increasing ecological efficiency, or decreasing harvest of apex predators. We explored some of the environmental consequences for marine and aquatic systems of one of the more familiar ancient dietary traditions, keeping...

Carbon footprint of the colombian cocoa production REA
Ortiz-Rodríguez,Oscar O.; Villamizar-Gallardo,Raquel A.; Naranjo-Merino,Carlos A.; García-Caceres,Rafael G.; Castañeda-galvís,María T..
ABSTRACT Cocoa is an important commercial crop in the tropics; and estimating the carbon emissions in the producing-areas is a worthwhile effort. The main goal of the current paper was to evaluate the carbon footprint (CF) per kilogram of Colombian cocoa bean produced under conventional and agroforestry managements, following the methods proposed by PAS 2050. In this research, we compared our results to other worldwide researches, showing an overview of the current limitations and challenges involving the CF researches. Our results showed that all calculated environmental burdens were lower for the conventional management. In the agroforestry practice, composting of cocoa pod husks contributed with approximately 34.00E+00 g methane and 2.55E+00 g nitrous...

Carbon footprint: สำคัญอย่างไรสำหรับการค้าข้าวในอนาคต? Thai Agricultural
Yothin Konboon.
Term "carbon footprint" has become tremendously popular over the last few years. With climate change high up on the political and corporate agenda, carbon footprint calculations are in strong demand. Numerous approaches have been proposed to provide estimates, ranging from basic online calculators to sophisticated Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). Despite its widely use however, there is a lack of information of what exactly carbon footprint is meant to be and what exactly the concept of carbon footprint is. This article was reviewed the background information of carbon footprint and its opportunities and threats on international goods trading, including paddy rice. An opportunity for research in this area in paddy rice production was also proposed.

Consumer attitudes towards sustainability attributes on food labels AgEcon
Saunders, Caroline M.; Guenther, Meike; Kaye-Blake, William; Miller, Sini; Tait, Peter R..
With current concerns about climate change and the general status of the environment, there is an increasing expectation that products have sustainability credentials, and that these can be verified. Labelling is a common method of communicating certain product attributes to consumers that may influence their choices. There are different types of labels with several functions. The aim of this study is to investigate consumers‟ purchase decisions towards certain sustainability claims on food products, particularly by displaying the reduction of carbon emissions. Choice outcomes will be evaluated using Discrete Choice Modelling (DCM). Data for the study is obtained by a web-based consumer survey undertaken in the United Kingdom (UK). Results provide...

ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ACCOUNTING FOR THE GERMAN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR AgEcon
Schmidt, Thomas G.; Osterburg, Bernhard.
How can we estimate the negative externalities of agriculture at the national level, and attribute these to specific production activities and outputs? The paper presents a method that calculates the mass flow in the whole agricultural sector including inputs from other sectors, and that allows to analyse resource use and emissions, e.g. of greenhouse gases. Data inputs are the German economic accounts for agriculture, farm structural survey and market statistics, as well as environmental statistics. In the framework of the German agricultural sector model RAUMIS, material flows within the agricultural sector are described, as well as inputs from other German sectors and imports. Through a processanalytical approach, all information is integrated and...

Le performance ambientali dei processi di produzione agricola. Cosa la Carbon Footprint dei prodotti agroalimentari non è in grado di dire. AgEcon
Passeri, N.; Blasi, E.; Franco, Silvio.

Red, white and 'green': the cost of carbon in the global wine trade AgEcon
Colman, Tyler; Paster, Pablo.
Climate change is altering a wide range of human activities, including wine making. While wine may appear to be one of the most natural alcoholic beverages, it is not without carbon inputs and emissions, which contribute to the very change in climate that is altering both wine and wine making. In this paper, we use a carbon life cycle analysis to develop a model for quantifying carbon inputs in a bottle of wine. Current regulatory arrangements do not capture the carbon costs of wine effectively since most costs are externalized. We conclude with estimates of the cost of carbon under various regulatory regimes, which suggest how wine producers and consumers can reduce the carbon footprint of wine.

Trade Policy Implications of Carbon Labels on Food AgEcon
Baddeley, Shane; Cheng, Peter; Wolfe, Robert.
Carbon labels providing information about the carbon footprints associated with food products might influence consumer purchases, which would have a differential effect on producers throughout global food chains. We first discuss why any labels work and then describe the mechanics of carbon labels. The novelty of the paper is an examination of the issues members of the WTO have raised about all types of labels since 1995. Although carbon labels are voluntary standards for now, their increasing use could become effectively mandatory. Difficulties for exporters will include the lack of an international standard and the challenge, especially for developing country exporters, of dealing with complex carbon footprint procedures.
